So I’m not a golfer but…

Last month I had the true honor of volunteering at the Eric Applen Memorial Golf Tournament at the Daytona Golf Club. Eric was the best friend of one of the most important people in my life and I knew that I wanted to find a way to get involved in the beautiful event. Being that I am not a golfer (yet) I was a Registration Connoisseur!!

Why the golf tournament?? Who is Eric? No one could say it better than his family (ENA Fund):

The Eric Nicolin Applen fund was created by our family, in memory of our son, Eric, who was diagnosed with Metastatic Osteogenic Sarcoma on June 1st, 2001, and passed away on November 12th, 2002, at the age of seventeen.

During the 18 months that Eric fought his battle with cancer, he was in the hospital on an average of 20 days out of every month. We were blessed with great friends and compassionate employers. We were fortunate to receive the gifts of monthly parking permits and gas cards to help our daily travels to the hospital, and gift cards for Eric so when he did get out of the hospital, he could go shopping for CD’s, video games, or whatever would make him smile, for even the shortest of times.

After Eric passed away, we wanted to give back the same gift of a smile to other cancer children and their families struggling with the daily living expenses and loss of income. We created the Eric Nicolin Applen Fund with the contributions received from his memorial, and we made a commitment to hold an annual Golf Tournament to raise additional money for the fund.

Eric believed strongly in Faith, Hope, and Courage. It gave him strength each day to face “another” day. Eric was not alone. Every child who battles cancer is our Hero… they have shown us the true meaning of Faith, Hope, and Courage.

The day was filled with golf, sun and fun. Even the kids got involved!!

Once all of the golfers came in from the course, my duties switched to assisting with the silent and live auctions. And let me tell you, the live auction was intense and such a blast!

The energy was high, the weather perfect and the love tangible. I am so lucky to call Eric’s best friend mine and while I did not have the opporunity to meet Eric, the photos, stories and the turnout to this tournament are a testament to the life he lead. I cannot wait to be involved again next year. And who knows, maybe someday I will golf.
