Not just a movie…

My first… attempt at Fried Green Tomatoes

With the weather vascillating between hot, cold, warm, chilly, and hot I was getting awfully worried that my tomatoes were going to all die without achieving their full potential. Thus, I opted to pluck a few to save them from premature death, and make some fried green tomatoes.

There are only a few simple ingredients and the steps are easy to follow:

After a thorough washing it was time for the slicing

about 1/4 to 1/2 inch slices

In a medium-sized bowl whisk two large eggs and one cup of milk

2 eggs, 1 cup milk

Scoop 1 cup all-purpose flour onto a plate

whole wheat flour for me

On a separate plate mix cornmeal, bread crumbs, salt and pepper…

1/2 c cornmeal, 1/2 c bread crumbs, 1/4 tsp pepper, 2 tsps salt

Dip the tomatoes in the flour to coat

Next, dredge in egg and milk mixture

After the dredgin’ dip coat the tomato in breadcumbs

In a large skillet, pour 1/4 to 1/2 inch vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. Once the oil is hot place tomatoes in the frying pan; about 4 to 5 at a time.

Make sure the tomatoes don’t touch

Once the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side. Remove from skillet and place on a towel

This experiment made my kitchen smell INCREDIBLE but I was still nervous to try them. After one bite the nervousness fell to the wayside and the tastebuds through a party in my mouth. Add a little hot sauce and you’ve got a dance!!! You SERIOUSLY have to try these, they are divine!
